Phone call recording for some businesses is a legal requirement. But in general, it provides an effective way for companies to study and understand their customers' needs better, and in turn, improve their profits. So in this article, a few easy and inexpensive ways are described to help you set up the call recording feature for your own business on your traditional or VoIP-based telephone landlines.

Using a Phone Recording Adapter to Record Calls.

A phone recording adapter is a device that monitors the phone line and passes the telephone signals and data to the computer. It has typically two ends with one end connected to your phone line, and the other end plugged to your microphone jack or USB port on your computer. One of the low-priced phone recording adapters is VEC LRX-37C that costs less than $25. The following diagram shows such a connection.

Whenever a call comes in or is dialed out, the adapter passes this information to the computer. The call recording software runs on the computer, monitors the line, and automatically records the phone conversations. However, the phone recording adapter is a passive listening device and hence can not play a legal announcement to the caller.

 

Using a Handset Recording Adapter to Record Phone Calls.

A handset recording adapter is similar to a regular phone recording adapter. The only difference is that it is plugged to the desk phone handset, as depicted below. One of the handset recording adapters that work very well with EzPhone Recorder is Vec LRX-40 (USB) for less than $60.

The above solution may also work if you have a VoIP-based phone line. If your VoIP desk phone has a regular handset jack, you might be able to record your calls by plugging this adapter to the handset.

 

Using a Voice Modem to Record Phone Calls.

A voice modem is just a regular dial-up modem that supports voice. We recommend USB-based external modems over internal ones due to its user-friendliness. Similar to the phone recording adapter, the USB-based external voice modem has two ends too. One end of it is connected to your phone line, and the other is plugged to your USB port on your computer. Details are illustrated in the diagram below.

The voice modem generally requires a vendor-supplied driver. You should install the modem hardware on your computer, run its driver setup software before the first use of your new voice modem. After the driver is set up, you can then connect the phone line from your wall to the modem jack marked Line shown above.

For incoming calls, the voice modem can send call details to the computer just as the phone recording adapter so all incoming calls can be automatically recorded. However, the voice modem can not detect dialed outgoing calls. Hence, it is recommended that you use manual mode to record all outgoing calls that you initiate.

Though unlike the phone recording adapter, the voice modem can not automatically record outgoing calls, it does support playback of a legal announcement before the call recording.

 

Recording from a VoIP-based Phone Line.

If you subscribe to a VoIP service, the VoIP company often provides you with a fiber, cable, or DSL modem that has standard telephone jacks on it, as shown below. So you can plug in your regular telephones, voice modems, or phone recording adapters to it.

Alternatively, they may provide you a VoIP adapter that can be plugged into their fiber, cable, or DSL modems. It then converts VoIP calls to regular telephone signals and has a phone jack on it, as in the following picture.

 

All recorded phone calls are stored on your hard drive and can be exported to other media. There is no recording length limit on each call. So as long as your hard disk permits, you can record and keep all phone conversations permanently.
